Healthy eating when eating out: Why credible nutrition advice matters

Recent data from UK Hospitality shows 60% of diners actively look for healthier options when dining out. This shift has accelerated since COVID, as people have become more aware of their wellbeing.  Add in the growing use of GLP-1 weight loss medication, and it’s clear the appetite for healthier, more nutritious menus and meals is likely to continue.

However, a recent Food Standards Agency (FSA) survey revealed that many consumers struggle to make healthier food choices when eating out.  At the same time, the huge amount of nutrition misinformation online, such as food fads and dietary quick fixes, with little science behind them makes it even harder for people to know what healthy eating really means in practice.  That’s why it’s so important that the options offered in canteens, restaurants, cafes, and the dietary advice offered by fitness and wellness professionals support people to eat healthily and provide credible, science-based advice.

As a nutritionist, I often see many opportunities for restaurants and caterers to make simple tweaks to recipes and menus that could make a big difference to nutritional balance, without compromising on taste.

If you work in catering, hospitality, or the fitness and wellness industry, every meal you prepare, every menu you design, and every programme you deliver is an opportunity to influence healthier eating habits, and ultimately, improve public health.

I’ve enjoyed working with Nutrition Scotland in the past, to develop the Scottish Eatwell Guide, so I am excited to be part of the team to deliver this RSPH Level 4 Nutrition course.  As well as being award-winning Registered Nutritionists and AfN Regional Reps, Suzanne and I also have many years of experience in:

Scotland’s Good Food Nation Plan

The Good Food Nation sets out a clear aim to create food environments that make it easier for people to eat well and improve the health of the population in Scotland.  For caterers, there is an increasing expectation that menus in schools, hospitals, prisons and workplace canteens provide food that is not only safe and appealing, but also nutritious, balanced and supportive of long-term health. 

The vision is for meals that are fresh, seasonal and showcase Scottish produce, while also meeting the nutritional needs of a diverse population. Caterers play a vital role in shaping these menus, ensuring that healthier, sustainable choices are not only available, but also attractive and enjoyable for everyone.
