I am so excited to have won the Caroline Walker Trust (CWT) 30th Anniversary award for Freelance Nutritionist of the Year. The work and impact Caroline Walker made to public health nutrition has been so motivating for me in my nutrition career.
Caroline Walker was a fearless and effective campaigner who believed passionately in improving public health through good food. She became an advisor to the BBC Food and Health campaign as well as Granada and Thames TV during her career.
Freelance Nutritionist of the Year
It is fantastic to be recognised by the Caroline Walker Trust as a freelance nutritionist promoting the science behind healthy food and diets.
Working as a freelance Registered Nutritionist is so rewarding for me as I love conducting research and communicating nutrition science to different audiences.
My freelance work includes providing one-to-one nutrition advice at my clinic in Edinburgh, providing nutrition support to members at Inside Out Personal Training, Grange Loan, Edinburgh and delivering workplace talks to help staff eat healthier and therefore be more productive. This includes providing practical advice on what to eat to improve resilience, what to eat to help manage stress and even how to avoid the afternoon slump.
Media Food Campaigner of the Year
I was also shortlisted in the ‘Media Food Campaigner of the Year’ category as part of the @AfNutr team. Together, we have set up a monthly Twitter chat to support Nutritionists registered with the AfN (Association for Nutrition).
The @AfNutr Twitter team are Registered Nutritionists Dr Laura Wyness, Dr Suzanne Zaremba (also Edinburgh-based) Lynn Burns and Vicki Pyne. The team has almost 1500 followers, host monthly Twitter chats and have developed the first guidance for Registered Nutritionists on using social media that will go some way to counter the increasing misinformation on diet and nutrition online.
The CWT Awards were presented at the Royal Society of Medicine, London on the 12th November 2019.
The Caroline Walker Trust
The trust was founded in 1989 to continue the work of the distinguished nutritionist, writer and campaigner Caroline Walker. It is a charity which undertakes specific projects, funded by grants and donations. This includes the publication of nutritional guidelines for vulnerable groups including older people and children.
The CWT said that this year’s awards showcase the passion, courage and conviction of those who work to improve the quality of our food and nation’s health, and for those who live in poverty.
Harman Bajwa Mohal, CWT Trustee and spokesperson from the Trust said “The shortlist comprised high calibre Nutritionists working across a range of settings just like Caroline Walker once did. We are pleased to announce that Laura who echoed the variety of Caroline’s work has won the Freelance Nutritionist of the Year”
